In 1972, Dr. Ben Schuman founded a private mental health facility in East Oakland. Dr. James Liles joined the Clinic Six years later, and it became the Schuman-Liles Clinic. In 1989,the Clinic then changed its organizational structure to become a non-profit corporation, in order to fulfill its mission. In 1995, Letha Barnett was appointed Executive Director. In response to increasing demand for services in the tri-city area of Alameda County, a satellite clinic opened in Fremont in 1993. Schuman-Liles Clinic serves an active caseload of more than 2500 persons with mental illnesses.
